Wong's Vast Oceans, Endless Skies in Dream Factory

Congratulations to Berlin-based artist Ming Wong, who was the SCA's 2023 Fall Audain Visual Artist in Residence (and currently an Adjunct Professor with us), for the opening of Dream Factory: Cantopop Mandopop 1980s-2000 on May 28, 2025, at the Chinese Canadian Museum (51 E. Pender St, Vancouver), featuring his work, Vast Oceans, Endless Skies, which was partly developed while working with SCA students during his AVAIR residency. More HERE. In particular, Wong and the SCA's Kathy Slade collaborated on Re:Cover Versions (CA 269/369: Methods and Concepts), which culminated in a one-day exhibition and set of performances on the 4th floor of the SCA, including work produced by the SCA alumni pictured above (Emma Campbell, Harvir Kaur Nahal, Caroline Chernega, Kathy Feng, Kaleb Thiessen, and Jenny Yu). Star Witnesses

The SCA's Judy Radul and Urban Subjects (the collaborative group of the SCA's Sabine Bitter, Jeff Derksen, and Helmut Weber), join Daniel Boyd, Vija Celmins, David Horvitz, Bouchra Khalili, Thomas Ruff, Carrie Mae Weems, and Paul Wong for Star Witnesses, which opens Thursday, June 26, at 7:00 PM, and runs from June 27 – September 28, 2025, at The Polygon Gallery (101 Carrie Cates Ct, North Vancouver). Lurch and more at Dancing on the Edge

With choreography by the SCA's Justine A. Chambers and Sarah Chase and Ame Henderson, Mascall Dance's Lurch runs June 18, 20 & 21 at 8:30 PM in Studio T here at SFU's School for the Contemporary Arts (149 W. Hastings St., Vancouver), presented as part of the 2025 edition of the Dancing on the Edge festival. Othe SCA folks performing as part of the festival include SCA alumnus Vanessa Goodman's Tuning (a collaboration with Alexis Fletcher, Ted Littlemore, and Ryan Jackson); the SCA's Stefan Smulovitz and SCA alumni Sarah Hutton in Jennifer McLeish-Lewis' To Fetch a Pail of Water; and SCA alumnus Jenn Edwards' The Centre of Time. Daniel and Eigenfeldt in Seoul

The SCA's Henry Daniel and Arne Eigenfeldt presented their paper, "Regenerating the Choreographic Archive through AI and Machine Learning Tools" on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, at ISEA2025 in Seoul, Korea, which has the theme "동동 (憧憧, Dong-Dong): Creators’ Universe." Find out more HERE.

TPE announce next season

Having just concluded their last season with a set of concerts showcasing the work of Kaija Saariaho, Turning Point Ensemble, which has the SCA's Owen Underhill as Artistic Director and conductor, have just announced their 2025-26 Season, featuring new premieres by Underhill and the SCA's Eldritch Priest, plus so much more. The World to Come

The SCA's Mauricio Pauly (de-keyed chormaharp, lapsteel, and electronics), SCA alumni Matthew Ariaratnam (guitar), and SCA students Seyi Atilola (electronics), Adelya Mullasheva (voice), Grace Murphy (bass), Leif Nordby (piano), and Sebastian Tulai (bass) are performing as part of The World to Come, a fundraiser for those affected by the Lapu Lapu tragedy (with all donations will go to Filipino Emergency Response), on Thursday, May 29, 2025, from 7:00 PM – 11:00 PM at 8EAST (8 E. Ocean's Horizon

Horizon, the work almost-SCA-alumnus Thanyarat "Ocean" Hongphankul presented in I’ll Meet You in the Space Between, the BFA Graduating Exhibition, which ran April 17 – May 3, 2025, in the SCA's Audain Gallery, was purchased by the SCA's Peter Dickinson, who's the SCA's Director, and installed in his office. Stir on D’Anunciação's Becoming

Edmeades in Multitudes

SCA alumnus Deborah Edmeades joins Sonny Assu, Chun Hua Catherine Dong, Odera Igbokwe, Cheyenne Rain LeGrande ᑭᒥᐊᐧᐣ, and Tatjana Mirkov-Popovicki for the group exhibition Multitudes, which opens Saturday, May 31, from 5:30 PM – 7:30 PM, and runs to August 24, 2025, with a curator-led tour on Friday, July 11, at 12:30 PM, and another tour on Saturday, July 26, at 2:00 PM. Forgiveness at Stratford

Congratulations to SCA alumnus Hiro Kanagawa and SCA alumnus June Fukumura, and the rest of the cast and crew (including SCA alumni Cindy Mochizuki and Sammy Chien) for the launch of their presentation of Kanagawa's adaptation of Mark Sakamoto's Forgiveness at the Stratford Festival (more HERE), which completed it's preview run and is set to open June 18, running to September 27, 2025. Mak talks Works from the Levels series

SCA alumnus Lauraine Mak is talking about her Capture Photography Festival installation, Works from the Levels series, at 2:30 PM at the Brighouse Station (6222 No. 3 Road, Richmond, where it's installed) on Saturday, June 7, 2025, as part of Doors Open Richmond: Public Art on the Canada Line, a walking tour of "the public art along the Canada Line and in the Richmond Art Gallery," led by Richmond Art Gallery Curator Zoë Chan and Richmond Public Art Planner Biliana Velkova, co-presented by Richmond Public Art, Richmond Art Gallery, Capture Photography Festival, and InTransit BC. Bourcheix-Laporte talks The Employee

Joining Joshua Schwebel, Lauren Wetmore, and Bopha Chhay, SCA alumnus Mariane Bourcheix-Laporte is part of the book launch for The Employee, which she contributed to, on June 5, 2025, at 6:00 PM at Emily Carr University of Art + Design's READ Books (520 E 1st Ave, Vancouver). Edited by Schwebel and Wetmore, The Employee is derived from a year-long eponymous artwork by Schwebel, originally presented at Forest City Gallery in London, Ontario, that explored the labour of cultural workers, including Schwebel's own. Shaw and Goodman's Looping Sounds and Limbs

Music on Main just shared a trailer for Looping Sounds and Limbs, a documentary about Caroline Shaw and SCA alumnus Vanessa Goodman's work, produced by Collide Entertainment, on YouTube. Not coincidentally, or so we guess, MoM's 2025/26 season (more HERE) includes Shaw (with Danni Lee Parpan) performing at the Fox Cabaret (2321 Main St, Vancouver) as part of MoM's Month of Tuesdays on Tuesday, April 7, as well as Goodman's WAIL, running January 26 & 27 at The Dance Centre (677 Davie St, Vancouver), co-presented with PuSh International Performing Arts Festival and The Dance Centre. Saraei demo

The PuSh International Performing Arts Festival shared a "PuSh20 Rewind" on their Instagram featuring "behind-the-scenes" footage of SCA MFA student Taha Saraei demonstrating some of the sculptures he produced for PuSh's presentation of Mirko Guido's All That Remains, which ran January 23 & 24, 2025, in the Fei and Milton Wong Experimental Theatre here at our place. Cap Review at the Art Book Fair

The Capilano Review, which has SCA alumnus Jacquelyn Zong-Li Ross as Art Editor, will be at the Vancouver Art Book Fair which runs JULY 4 – 6, 2025, at the Roundhouse Community Arts & Recreation Centre (81 Roundhouse Mews, Vancouver), along with many, many other exhibitors. More HERE.
